The Zonta Club of Joliet recently named member Cathy Lowery as the club’s 2015 Woman of the Year.
Elected by fellow Zonta Club members, Lowery joins a treasured group of women who have achieved this great honor.
“Zonta recognizes one of their members on an annual basis for making a significant contribution that has enhanced the visibility and operation of the club,” said Zonta President Mardi Wunderlich.
This year as the club’s fundraising chair, Lowery led the club in raising over $16,000 which will be donated to causes that support the mission of improving the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.
Of all the time and dedication given by Lowery, she is most proud of her tenure as the Chairwoman of the Advocacy Committee, a campaign she organized a few years ago to bring awareness around the human trafficking issue. Lowry represented the club by attending a 3-day training event hosted by the State of Illinois Health and Human Services Department.
“There are a lot of outstanding women in our club, but Cathy Lowery is like having two Zonta members rolled into one,” said Wunderlich. “For the past two years, Cathy has been our Secretary and Chair of our Fundraising Committee. If Cathy’s in charge of something, we know it will be a success. She’s dedicated, genuine and kind, and Zonta is lucky to have her.”
Lowery has a professional background in sales and marketing, primarily in telecommunications and technology. After 42 years of work, she retired as the Director of Marketing and Customer Service for Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants. She now enjoys volunteer work, gardening, golfing with her husband, and spending time with her ten grandchildren.
“I am so very honored to receive this award from this particular group of women,” said Lowery. “We are all busy professionals that still find the time to improve the lives of women both locally and worldwide. I believe deeply in our mission and am grateful to be a part of this organization.”
The mission of the Joliet Zonta Club is to advance the status of women locally and globally. The club, made up of professional women in the Joliet area, is a service-based organization that raises funds through their annual February fundraiser. The money Zonta raises goes toward scholarships, international projects, and charities. In addition, the Joliet Zonta Club sponsors a local charity every two years. During those two years, the club’s members provide service hours, complete special projects and provide funding to the charity.
